“There never was a time when a major social problem was solved by beating a child. And there never will be such a time… For centuries adults have injured children and have lied about it, and other adults have heard those lies and then merely turned away… we must begin putting the blame where it belongs.”

- C. EVERETT KOOP, M.D., Sc. D., Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health Service, U. S. Department of Health and Human Services; from the Keynote Address to the Kids Symposium, “Uniting America to Fight Childhood Injury,” Washington, D.C., February 16, 1989 See http://www.nospank.net/koop2.htm

Interesting. Personally, I do think at times it is appropriate to spank, spank not beat. I recall Sinbad saying that spanking does not teach kids violence, it teaches them to sit down and be quiet.

But seriously, I do see that there is a general problem of abuse where folk beat and/or spank out of anger. Hopefully the no spank campaign will educate parents on HOW to control emotions and discipline effectively.

I agree trula, there is never any reason to hit a child. it’s just ignorant.

  4. Trula says:

Michele, what’s a good reason to hit a child? When is it ever appropriate to strike a child?

  5. Trula says:

The No Spank campaign seeks to educate parents that hitting children is unneccessary to discipline them effectively.
