The question of the day is: What do you think about BMI? (Body Mass Index) Have you ever calculated yours? Here’s an online calculator if you want to:

I like knowing my BMI. According to this calculator my BMI is currently 32.0 and I am obese. Ate the start of the challenge I was 80 pounds over my ideal weight, currently I am 68 pounds over my ideal weight. I think it is a good tool for assessing my weight. It’s good to know. I also think it is a good motivator for me to stay on track of my goal to get in shape and be fit. A lot of the diseases and issues listed that can be triggered by having a high BMI runs in my family. I have seen it cause a lot of physical, emotional, and financial stress…if I can help avoid that by not being obese, I’m all for it, and using tools like this is a big help because I have a hard time ‘seeing’ myself as being overweight. In the mirror, looking at pictures of myself, I just don’t see it. Which is partly how I gained so much weight without noticing.

Obesity is a condition in which the natural energy reserve of humans or other mammals, which is stored in fat tissue, is expanded far beyond usual levels to the point where it impairs health. Obesity in wild animals is relatively rare, but it is common in domestic animals like pigs and household pets who may be overfed and underexercised. In humans it is considered a major challenge to health.

Obesity is a hard word to say and living in the states being overweight is such a norm that we often don’t ‘see’ our fat as obesity, I think. I mean when most people think ‘obese’ they think people who are 300 pounds or more, you know? But obesity is defined as being overweight by 30 percent of the ideal body weight, which can vary within 40 pounds. Like a small-boned woman my height can weigh as little as 117 and be fine, or as much as 157 and be fine. I’m medium-boned so 130 is a good weight for me.

and of course there are people who are clinically obese who have no problems with it all! and feel fine, and have no family history of diabetes or heart disease or anything to worry about, and are fit and active. However I am not one of those people, so I have to get this fat off me.

Today I am going to my spinning class, I can’t wait! I am going to really challenge myself to do all the stand-up runs and to stay with the going uphill when we do those parts. Then I’m going to get on the treadmill and brisk walk at 4.5 mph for 30 minutes.
