ibop has decided to live at home following her high school graduation in June and attend community college, then transfer to an art college to finish her B.A, then stay there and do a MFA for 2 years. I truly thought she was just musing doing 2 years at home just to help me transition into accepting she’d be leaving home soon, but no, she was really pondering it! She researched all her options and decided to do this because they offered her a scholarship which combined with her other scholarship means her entire tuition will be paid for including books, which is grand. If she went to the art college right away, we would probably have to take out loans because the tuition there (including room and board and books) would be close to $15k per term or 30k a year. That is roughly 7 times the cost of a year of community college. She just got the news that one art college she was accepted at agreed to defer her acceptance for 2 years, so she is very excited because she can get her academics out of the way and then do the bulk of the work for her major at the art college. She is also going to apply at a few more art schools to keep her options open.

I am very happy and proud of her for this plan, not only because of the enormous amount of money saved but because I will have my baby girl home for 2 more years. Y’all just don’t know, I have mentally been preparing for her leaving home since she started high school so that my heart wouldn’t break in two when she left. This way is nice because I won’t feel as apprehensive or upset about her leaving at 20 rather than 18, you know? On the flip side, I will have to really think about how I will interact with her once she turns 18 and has graduated from high school. That’s what she told me, she said Mom we’ll have to discuss house rules and stuff, like you can’t expect me to have a 12 o’clock curfew once I’m in college.
